TRIPOLI, Libya, (AP) – A series of NATO airstrikes have targeted sites in and around Tripoli overnight.

It wasn’t immediately clear what the missiles and bombs targeted early Monday. The strikes followed a day of heavy bombardment around the Libyan capital.

The intense strikes follow increased NATO attacks in Tripoli, the stronghold of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

On Sunday, at least ten strikes hit military bases on Tripoli’s outskirts.

A NATO statement said those strikes hit missile storage areas and launchers, command and control facilities and a radar system.

NATO airstrikes are assisting a rebel insurgency against Gaddafi’s regime, which appears to be fraying as a result of the strikes, the insurgency, defections and a naval blockade.
