Riyadh, Asharq Al-Awsat- Egyptian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Muhammad Qasim said contacts between Riyadh and Cairo are not aimed at forming axes in the region, but are “focused on serving joint Arab action.”

Qasim told Asharq Al-Awsat that Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu-al-Ghayt’s visit to Saudi Arabia yesterday and his meeting with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin-Abdulaziz “come within the framework of Saudi-Egyptian contacts that both countries seek to maintain on a continuous basis.”

He affirmed that the custodian of the two holy mosques and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak are aware of the importance of the current phase to encourage Arab unity and achieve joint Arab interests.

Commenting on the increased contacts between his country and Saudi Arabia over the past few days, Qasim said: “it is natural to have contacts; it is unnatural for these contacts to stop when important events are taking place in the region.”
