CAIRO, (AP) – Egyptian authorities ordered the detention of the truck driver involved in a crash with a tour bus that killed eight Americans and injured 21 others.
The accident took place on Sunday when a tour bus slammed into a truck parked on the side of a narrow desert road in the early hours of the morning as it was on its way to the ancient temples of Abu Simbel in southern Egypt.
Aswan attorney general, Bahaa el-Wakeel, ordered the four-day-detention of the truck driver pending further investigation. The driver of the tour bus is currently in intensive care.
Road accidents are common in Egypt because of bad roads and poor enforcement of traffic rules, and crashes involving tour buses are not uncommon.
An estimated 8,000 people die in car accidents annually.
