U.S. journalist Glenn Greenwald (L) walks with his partner David Miranda in Rio de Janeiro’s International Airport in this August 19, 2013 file photo. The British authorities forced the Guardian newspaper to destroy material leaked by Edward Snowden, its editor has revealed, calling it a “pointless” move that would not prevent further reporting on U.S. and British surveillance programmes. In a column in the paper on August 20, 2013, Alan Rusbridger said the “bizarre” episode a month ago and the detention at London’s Heathrow airport on Sunday of the partner of a Guardian journalist showed press freedom was under threat in Britain. London’s Metropolitan Police defended the detention under an anti-terrorism law of Miranda, the Brazilian partner of Greenwald, saying it was “legally and procedurally sound”.
