JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — The world’s newest country will soon have its newest currency.
South Sudan announced Monday that the South Sudan pound will replace the Sudanese pound as the country’s currency. South Sudan became the world’s newest nation on Saturday, the culmination of a 2005 peace process that ended more than two decades of civil war.
The new currency will feature the image of Dr. John Garang, a beloved war hero and founder of the southern liberation struggle.
President Salva Kiir on Monday also swore in a new caretaker Cabinet, with some changes in titles. The former minister of regional cooperation is now the foreign affairs minister, while the southern army and veterans’ affairs minister became the defense minister.
