DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Kuwait Airways says flights have resumed after workers called off a strike that has grounded its planes since the weekend.

Airline spokesman Adel Boresly said Wednesday that the carrier resumed business Tuesday evening and that operations are now back to normal.

Government-owned Kuwait Airways began grounding flights Saturday evening in response to a strike by employees demanding higher pay. Their strike followed a work stoppage by customs officials that blocked hundreds of trucks from crossing the border.

Kuwaitis are used to well-paying government jobs and cradle-to-grave benefits that are increasingly a burden on state finances. Calls for better working terms have grown louder in the wake of the Arab Spring uprisings.
