According to media reports on 23 May 2014, Shadi al-Menei, an Islamist leader of the Ansar Beit al-Maqdis militant group was shot dead in the Sinai Peninsula. The militant group was linked to al-Qaeda-inspired groups and alleged to be responsible of terrorist attacks killing more than 200 Egyptian soldiers since July 2013 after Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi was ousted.
