Beirut- Primary investigations conducted by Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces (ISF) proved that the bodyguard of a former minister close to the Syrian regime was involved in an explosion that took place in the town of Majdel Anjar, east Lebanon, leaving four injured civilians.

The ISF Information Branch reached the conclusions after questioning three suspects, including Ibrahim Hashem Abu Diab, one of the bodyguards of former minister Wiam Wahhab, a close ally to the Syrian regime.

Judicial sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that the primary testimony of Abu Diab, who was arrested by the ISF last week, “included a clear confession.”

The sources added that Lebanese investigators had faced Abu Diab with unchallenged data that prove he was linked to the explosion.

“The ISF wouldn’t have arrested the man without being certain he had ties with the explosion, because they know the matter is very delicate,” the sources said.

Last Tuesday, an explosion was reported inside the Lebanese border-village of Majdel Anjar in the Beqaa Valley.

Another judicial source said that the number of arrested suspects had raised to three, including Abu Diab, another man from his family, and a third man from the Abdel-Khalek family from the town of Majdel Anjar. The source added that four other suspects, also close to Wahhab, were being pursued for their involvement in the explosion.

As soon as news about Abu Diab’s arrest was circulated, Wahhab launched a fierce campaign against the ISF Information Branch, saying the matter was politicized.

Wahhab said the ISF should first remove posters hung up in Majdel Anjar offending him before looking for those behind the explosion.

Wahhab had denied reports saying that Bou Diab was his bodyguard as had been previously reported, saying the man is a supporter of his “Arab Tawhid Party.”

Photos released following the former minister’s comments showed Abu Diab standing behind Wahhab at a celebration, carrying a machine gun.
