Cairo-The Giza Criminal Court sentenced on Wednesday two defendants from the al-Warraq terrorist cell to death.

Two other members were sentenced to five years in prison and one defendant was acquitted of all charges.

All of the defendants faced charges of targeting police officers and public institutions, and killing non-commissioned police officers.

The prosecution issued different charges against them, including the possession of weapons, killing civilians and police officers, and joining an outlawed terrorist group.

On the other hand, a major regional conference for parliamentarians of the Middle East and Northern African countries (MENA) is being held in Aswan, Egypt, from January 31 to February 2.

The conference deals with the Challenges Posed by Extremism Leading to Terrorism and Preventative Criminal Justice Responses.

The participants have called for forming a joint high committee among world parliaments to put common plans to combat terrorism. They stressed that fighting terrorism should not only be limited to military confrontations but should also extend to educational, political, religious, economic and social means to confront this abomination.

The conference, which was organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in cooperation with the United Nations and in the presence of representatives and parliament speakers, aims at strengthening the role of parliaments in preventing and countering terrorism.

Their role is crucial in setting-up solid legislative foundations to terrorism prevention measures and establishing and implementing national plans of action aimed at the prevention of violent extremism leading to terrorism through a comprehensive approach that addresses the conditions conducive to terrorism.

For his part, IPU Senior Adviser Ambassador Mokhtar Omar said Wednesday that launching the first initiative between the U.N. and IPU to put a common strategy to combat terrorism and extremism ends the gap between the adoption of resolutions and their implementation.
