London- Libya wanted to give $50 million to murder former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, according to newly released Irish documents.

Libya’s Chief of Protocol Saad Muzber informed Irish ambassador to Rome Eamon Kennedy that Libya was eager to fund the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in a bid to wipe out Thatcher, during the latter’s visit to Tripoli in 1986 — The meeting was held in response to comments made by Libyan government officials in support of the IRA.

Muzber reportedly told the Irish ambassador: “Thatcher and her children will have to pay, let there be no doubt about that. If she does not leave office she and her family will be destroyed.”

During the heated two hour exchange, Muzber was reportedly “screaming, weeping and sweating all at once” according to the documents.

Kennedy said: “But towards the end he said something to which I took serious exception… He said that Libya will show full support for the IRA against Thatcher.”

The Irish diplomat voiced fears that “Libya will reactivate its support for the IRA in Britain and will endeavor to murder Thatcher and her family”. He added: “Two hours with Saad Muzber made that quite clear.”

Muammar Gaddafi’s support of the IRA is believed to date back to 1972, when the former President provided the paramilitary group with a large arsenal of arms. After strengthening ties with organization in 1986 following US bombing of Libya, Gadaffi continued to supply weapons to the group.

French authorities stopped a Libyan ship en route to Northern Ireland carrying around 1,000 AK-47 machine guns, more than 50 ground-to-air missiles and two tonnes of Semtex.
