Washington – U.S. Senate Barbara Boxer sponsored a legislation to abolish the Electoral College in the presidential elections.

The California senate said that the Electoral College is the only office in the land where you win and you may not win.

“In my lifetime, I have seen two elections where the winner of the general election did not win the popular vote. This is the only office in the land where you can get more votes and still lose the presidency,” she added.

Boxer described the Electoral College as an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect the modern society.

She added that it needs to be changed immediately since every American should be guaranteed that their vote counts.

“It will be an uphill battle because the smaller states like it the way it is,” the Democrat Senate said. “But it’s not right. Every single person’s vote should count,” she demanded.

In the latest tallies from last week’s presidential vote, Hillary Clinton is up by more than 700,000 votes nationwide, but President-elect Donald Trump won by taking the Electoral College tally.The Electoral College count now stands at 290 for Trump and 232 for Clinton.

This isn’t the first time the Democrats lose at the Electoral College. A similar situation occurred in 2000, when Vice President Al Gore won about half a million more votes, but George W. Bush was elected president because of the Electoral College.

Over 4.3 million people signed a petition on “change.org” website petition asking 538 Republicans in the Electoral College to vote for Clinton on December 19.

For the bill to pass, the Electoral College will require a constitutional amendment, supported by two-thirds of the House and Senate, as well as three-quarters of the state legislatures.

In 2012, the President-elect tweeted: “The Electoral College is a disaster for democracy.” But after he won, Trump tweeted: “The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play. Campaigning is much different!”
