London-Muslim leaders have invited U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to visit Scottish mosques when he travels to the country to open his new golf course later this month.

A statement published in Scotland’s Herald newspaper from Annandale Mosque and Roxburgh Street Mosque, both in Edinburgh, invited Trump to learn more about Muslims during his visit.

“Donald Trump aspires to lead the free world but his run for the White House has been rooted in ignorance and intolerance,” they said.

The presumptive Republican candidate last year proposed a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States.

The billionaire is due to fly to Scotland later this month to launch his Turnberry golf course.
Trump’s views prompted widespread opposition in Britain, where he owns two golf courses on the west and east Scottish coasts.

United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron said Trump’s remarks were “divisive, stupid and wrong.”

Neither Cameron nor Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon plan to meet with Trump on his visit, which coincides with the result of Britain’s referendum on EU membership on June 24.
Spiritual leaders in the Islamic community invited Trump to “learn more about the Muslims that he offends.”

“We would welcome the opportunity to show him the work that we are doing in the community in Edinburgh when he comes to Scotland,” said Hafiz Ghafoor of Annandale Mosque and Munawar Hussein, secretary of Roxburgh St Mosque and Islamic Center, in a joint statement.

Scottish Liberal Democratic leader Willie Rennie called on the politician to see how mosques help marginalized groups like the homeless “and then try to justify his outlandish claims.”
