Iranian authorities have arrested 41 people linked to ISIS in connection with this week’s attacks in Tehran, Iran’s intelligence ministry said.

The intelligence ministry said Friday 41 suspects were arrested in Tehran, in the northwestern provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan, and in West Azerbaijan, near the borders with Iraq and Turkey.

It described the suspects as “agents of ISIS” and said they included “operational teams”.

Documents and equipment “for carrying out terrorist operations” were also seized, the ministry said in a statement.

Earlier, the Mizanonline website close to the judiciary said nine people suspected of links to ISIS were arrested on Thursday and Friday in the southern province of Fars and in Kermanshah.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombings and gun attacks on the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini on Wednesday that left 17 people dead and around 50 injured.

The authorities has said five Iranians, who had joined ISIS and traveled to its Iraq and Syria bastions, carried out the attack.

Security forces have launched a nationwide hunt for suspected accomplices of the attackers.

Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi has said Iran identified several jihadists, where they meet and where they hide.

The victims were laid to rest on Friday.

ISNA news agency also said that security forces have found explosive vests and other equipment, as well as an abandoned car, packed with at least 22 pistols, in Kermanshah province.

Although the US military is also fighting ISIS in Syria, as well as Iraq, President Donald Trump said in response to the attacks in Iran that the country is reaping what it sows.

That drew fire from Tehran, which described his statements as “repugnant.”

Since Trump took office in January, relations between Washington and Tehran have worsened.

The US has imposed new sanctions on Tehran for its support of “terrorist” groups in the Middle East, ballistic missile tests and human rights abuses.
