A few days after Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union party (CDU) demanded that mosques in Germany are monitored, the president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution revealed that the office already monitors around 90 mosques.

The president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Hans-Georg Maaßen said in a statement to the joint “Morning Programme” which is broadcast by both channel one and two in Germany that the office is concerned about the large number of mosques where incitement to war and hatred is rife.

The call to monitor mosques was made last Friday by the head of the ruling Christian Democratic Union Volcker Cawdor. The timing of the statement raised questions because it came on the day that the populist Alternative for Germany party began its campaign. The party achieved large electoral victories thanks to its hostile policy to foreigners, refugees and Muslims.
