One of the three schoolgirls who left London in February 2015 to join ISIS has died, according to what Reuters reported on Thursday. The agency quoted Tasnime Akunjee, the girl’s family lawyer, who said that Kadiza Sultana’s family learned of her death in Raqqa, Syria, a few weeks ago. The BBC said that Kadiza was probably killed in an air strike in Syria.

Sultana, 16, flew from Gatwick Airport in London to Turkey on the 17th of Febrauary 2015 with two friends. The three schoolgirls – Kadiza Sultana,16, Shamima Begum, 15, and Amira Abase, also 15, left their homes in east London on the 17th of February and took a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul, Turkey, from where they travelled to Syria. Their running away to Syria shocked British society. In subsequent months, the media reported that the girls had married ISIS fighters.

The family’s lawyer Tasnime Akunjee said that Kadiza Sultana’s family learned of her death in Raqqa a few weeks ago, and ITV News reported on Thursday that Sultana is believed to have been killed in a Russian airstrike in Raqqa.

Sultana was planning to return to Britain, and her family had been in contact with her to discuss the possibility of her escape from Raqqa according to an interview with her sister. The interview included recordings of the alleged telephone conversations between the two sisters and was published by ITV News. Sultana, 16, left London by boarding a flight at Gatwick Airport that was bound for Turkey on the 17th of February 2015.
