Asharq Al-Awsat and its family yesterday lost its Deputy Editor in Chief and one of its most senior writers, Mr Ali Ibrahim, following a severe heart attack.

Our late colleague was born in the Egyptian capital Cairo and completed his primary and secondary education there. He completed his further education at Beirut Arab University (BAU) in Lebanon where he studied political science. He began working as a journalist in 1973, immediately after he graduated, at the Egyptian Middle East News Agency, and progressed from covering local affairs to national and international economic affairs.

Ali Ibrahim then moved to the United Arab Emirates where he worked as an editor at the Al-Bayan newspaper in Dubai. He then became the head of the economics department there.

Ali Ibrahim then joined the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper in 1990 and settled in London as an economics editor. He later moved to the political section and become the head of it. Later, he was promoted to the assistant editor position, and in May 2010 he was promoted again and became the deputy editor in chief, a position that he held until his death yesterday. He leaves behind his wife and three daughters.
