The military says it detained the suspects Thursday and Friday.

A military statement says those captured include four suspects in the northern city of Kirkuk. The suspects are allegedly associated with a regional al-Qaeda in Iraq leader.

Another suspected al-Qaeda operator was detained in Sulaiman Bek, 100 miles (170 kilometers) north of Baghdad.
