BAGHDAD (AP) – The U.S. military says an American soldier has been killed in combat with enemy forces north of Baghdad.

Four other U.S. soldiers were wounded during the operation in the predominantly Sunni town of Duluiyah, some 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the Iraqi capital.

The statement says the operation Wednesday targeted a “facilitator and a suicide vest cell” known to be operating in the area.

The names of the soldiers have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The death raises to at least 4,296 members of the U.S. military who have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003. That’s according to an Associated Press count.
