CAIRO (AFP) – US Middle East envoy George Mitchell was in Cairo on Sunday for talks with officials, calling on regional players to take steps for a resumption of peace talks.

The former US senator told reporters he met with Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit after talks Saturday night with intelligence chief Omar Suleiman.

“We discussed our shared commitment to comprehensive peace,” which can be achieved “by a two state solution with Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace and security,” Mitchell said.

“Everyone who truly believes in peace has to take responsibility to take actions to achieve that goal.”

Egypt, together with the United States, is hoping to see a resumption of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, suspended since the conflict in Gaza last December-January.

Mitchell was due later Sunday to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem for a second time on his latest regional trip aimed at restarting the peace talks.
