CAIRO, Egypt, AP -A U.S. Air Force officer taking part in a military exercise was killed in a road accident in northern Egypt, a spokesman for the U.S. military said Tuesday. Two other Air Force members were injured.

The three were in a car on a highway west of Alexandria when the accident occurred Monday, said Capt. Scott Betts of the U.S. Army.

Betts gave no details on how the accident happened. The officers were en route either to or from the Bright Star maneuvers, which aim to share tactics and increase security cooperation among allies in the Middle East.

The Air Force public affairs in Washington said later Tuesday that the fatally injured officer was a woman but declined to further identify her. The office provided no information on the other two.

About 16,000 troops from 14 countries — about half of them from the United States — are taking part in the three-week-long exercises, which end Oct. 3.
