NEW YORK, (Reuters) – Two accused co-conspirators of an Afghan immigrant who has admitted plotting to bomb the New York City subways pleaded not guilty on Thursday to planning the attack.

Adis Medunjanin, 25, and Zarein Ahmedzay, 24, were charged in federal court in Brooklyn with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction against persons or property in the United States, conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country and receiving al Qaeda training.

The two men attended high school in the New York City borough of Queens with Najibullah Zazi, 25, who on Monday pleaded guilty to training with al Qaeda in Pakistan and planning to blow himself up on the subway.

Prosecutors said there could be additional suspects outside the United States, and investigations were continuing. “This attack would have been deadly,” said U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in a statement on Thursday.

The men also are accused of providing material support, including currency, training, communications equipment and personnel to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network. Ahmedzay is also charged with making false statements to the FBI. They face maximum sentences of life in prison if convicted.
