ANKARA, (AP) – Turkish officials say seven Kurdish rebels have been killed in a clash with security forces in the southeastern part of the country.

A statement from the governor’s office Saturday said a government-paid militiaman helping Turkish troops was also killed during the skirmish in the mainly Kurdish town of Eruh.

The statement said two of the dead rebels were women. Security forces launched the operation Friday following a mine explosion that targeted the militia force.

Kurdish rebels also known as PKK have been fighting for autonomy in the region since 1984. Tens of thousands of people have been killed since then.
