Riyadh, Damascus, Asharq Al-Awsat- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is scheduled to arrive in Riyadh tomorrow for an official meeting with the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin-Abdulaziz to discuss developments in the region and the peace process as well as bilateral relations between Damascus and Riyadh, Asharq Al-Awsat can reveal.

This will be Al-Assad’s third visit since the improvement of Saudi-Syrian relations which went through a period of stagnation during which contacts between the two sides’ officials stopped.

Sources that spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat did not disclose the issues that King Abdullah would be discussing with President Al-Assad but pointed out that Saudi Ambassador in Damascus Abdullah al-Ayfan would arrive in his country’s capital today within the framework of the preparations for the anticipated Saudi-Syrian summit.

Arab diplomatic sources told Asharq Al-Awsat in Damascus that this summit in Riyadh might possibly prepare the way for a tripartite Syrian-Saudi-Egyptian summit within the framework of the efforts to achieve Arab reconciliations. Should this tripartite summit be confirmed, the meeting between Egyptian President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak and Syrian President Al-Assad would be their second since the quadripartite summit which Riyadh hosted and which was also attended by the emir of Kuwait as part of Riyadh’s preparations for completing the inter-Arab reconciliations.
