DUBAI (AFP) – An Iranian Sunni rebel group announced it has executed two more policemen from a group of 16 men whom it said were taken hostage in June, Al-Arabiya satellite television reported on Sunday.

The Dubai-based channel said it had received a telephone call from a Jundullah (Soldiers of God) spokesman and broadcast archive footage of masked fighters preparing to kill another two blindfolded hostages.

The spokesman threatened to carry out two more such killings each week unless Iranian authorities agreed to their demands for the release of 200 of the group’s detained fighters.

On June 27, Al-Arabiya reported that two of the 16 border police had been executed. Another two were killed the previous week, bringing the tally overall to 10, according to the group.

The border guards were captured on June 12 at a checkpoint in the town of Saravan, in restive Baluch-populated southeastern Iran, and taken across the border into Pakistan, according to the Iranian authorities.

Jundallah has said it carried out a string of attacks and kidnappings in Sistan-Baluchestan, which is home to a substantial Sunni ethnic Baluch community and lies on a major narcotics route from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
