BAGHDAD,(AP) – A suicide car bomber targeting an American patrol in northeastern Baghdad was killed by U.S. troops Saturday, police said. Another suicide car bomber killed two Iraqi policemen south of the capital.

American troops opened fire on the explosive-laden vehicle before it reached them, setting off a major explosion that injured three civilian bystanders, said 1st Lt. Ali Abbas. The blast, which occurred around 10 a.m. in the New Baghdad neighborhood, also damaged nearby homes. There was no information on U.S. casualties. The area was cordoned off by U.S. and Iraqi troops, witnesses said.

In Babil province south of the capital, a suicide car bomber detonated his vehicle at an Iraqi police checkpoint north of Hillah, killing two policemen and wounding two others, the provincial police reported.
