MAHMUDIYA, Iraq (Reuters) – Five Iraqi soldiers were killed in a town south of Baghdad on Thursday when a suicide car bomb exploded next to their patrol, an Interior Ministry source said.
The attack happened shortly before noon in Mahmudiya, a town in the lawless area south of the capital that U.S. forces have dubbed the "triangle of death." The bombing also wounded 11 Iraqis including a young child.
Iraq”s fledgling security forces are frequently targeted by insurgents as Iraq”s government tries to decrease its dependence on U.S.-led foreign forces to stabilize the country.
