Egyptian President meets with King Abdullah in Cairo on Tuesday/Petra

Cairo- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi discussed on Tuesday with Jordan’s King Abdullah II the need to kick start serious and effective peace talks between the Palestinians and Israelis based on the two-state solution, Egypt’s presidential office said on Tuesday.

“The two sides discussed ways to push the stagnant Middle East peace process, especially in light of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration coming to power,” a presidential statement said.

It added that a two-state solution “with a Palestinian state…with east Jerusalem as its capital is a nationalist principle that cannot be conceded”.

The two leaders warned that any proposals not based on two-state and international legitimacy resolutions would have serious repercussions on the entire region.

Jordan’s King and Sisi held a summit meeting in Cairo Tuesday and discussed the prospects for boosting Jordanian-Egyptian ties and current regional developments.

During their meeting at Al Ittihadiyah Palace, the two leaders tackled regional developments, mainly the Syrian crisis, the Middle East peace process, Jerusalem, and the war on terrorism.

Concerning Jerusalem, King Abdullah and Sisi stressed the importance of maintaining the historic status quo in the holy city, and warned that any attempt to undermine it would have ramifications on the region’s security and stability, Jordan’s Petra news agency reported.

Their meeting came two days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted he had met secretly a year ago with Sisi and Jordan’s King in the southern Jordanian town of Aqaba in the presence of former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

The Egyptian presidential office issued a statement late Sunday neither denying nor confirming the occurrence of the meeting.
