Riyadh, Asharq Al-Awsat- Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights Commission will visit the United Arab Emirates to investigate the conditions of Saudi citizens in its prisons. This comes following the Commission’s visit to Syria, Lebanon and Jordan to observe the status of Saudi detainees held in these countries. It is worth noting that Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai, had pardoned 20 Saudi prisoners.

The Saudi Human Rights Commission pointed out that the cases of six Saudi prisoners are related to fraud and the possession of drugs while a seventh detainee is accused of kidnapping and murder and has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Dr. Zuhair al Harthi, the official spokesman for the Commission told Asharq Al-Awsat that the delegation that includes Dr. Zamil al Mani, from the International Organizations division, and Ahmed Fawzan, from the Investigation and Observation department, has been sent to inspect the conditions of all Saudi detainees, to identify the reasons behind their detention and the cases filed against them, and whether they are being granted their legal rights.

Al Harthi stressed the importance of respecting the laws of any country when traveling abroad and warned against gangs that particularly target Saudis.

Through fact-finding commissions and delegations concerned with monitoring the conditions of Saudi detainees in various Arab and Western countries, the governmental Human Rights Commission is awaiting the extradition of detainees to Saudi Arabia to be trialed and sentenced in their homeland.
