Saudi Foreign Minister Congratulates Mubarak on Historical Elections | ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive 2005 -2017

Cairo- Prince Saud Al-Faisal, the Foreign Minister, who conveyed a message from the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak today, said the message was a message of congratulations on the occasion of the stage being passed by Egypt and the expected result of the presidential elections in the country.

Asked if he had exchanged views with Mubarak on issues pertaining to the extraordinary Arab Summit, Prince Saud said he had not exchanged views on the issue with Mubarak, ”but the issue will be reviewed at the meeting of the Arab League”s Council”.

On the Saudi proposal, pertaining to the establishment of an international center for fighting terrorism, Prince Saud the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had presented a draft of a resolution to the Council of the Arab League to support the measure taken by the Kingdom in this connection by taking the proposal to the UN”s General Assembly.

”The proposal was conveyed to the UN”s General Assembly for obtaining a resolution by the UN”s General Assembly for the formation of a commission which will study the proposal and extend its recommendation to the UN”s forthcoming General Assembly, he said adding that ”it is hoped that the Arab League will adopt the proposal”.

On raising the level of the Arab diplomatic representation in Iraq, Prince Saud said ”we are keen on raising the level of the diplomatic representation”.

He noted that no political obstacles face sending a Saudi ambassador to Baghdad, adding ”but security obstacles exist in this respect, and when these obstacles are removed, the Saudi embassy will be open in Baghdad”.

Reiterating that Iraq is linked with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with close relations, Prince Saud said ”we are keen on sending our ambassador to Iraq”, and added ”the arrival of the Iraqi ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia may soon take place”.
