Kuwait, – American soldiers &#34accidentally&#34 fired on a civilian car that entered a shooting range in which they were training on Tuesday, injuring two adults and a child, the U.S. military said.

In a brief statement, the military said there were three other children in the vehicle. They apparently escaped unharmed. The civilian passengers were &#34not related to the U.S. military,&#34 the statement said.

&#34The child sustained minor injuries and the extent of the adults” injuries are unknown at this time,&#34 according to the statement. They were taken to a local hospital.

Kuwait”s defense ministry had announced the incident earlier, but gave few details. The identities of the passengers were not immediately known and it was not clear how they entered the vast off-limits area in Udairi, northwest of the country, where the troops were training with live ammunition. The defense ministry also said the injured were in a &#34stable&#34 condition.

The Kuwaiti military issued a report emphasizing that the department of moral instruction and public relations has repeatedly warned the public against approaching the closed off area for their own safety.

Udairi, some 45 kilometers (28 miles) from the Kuwaiti border with Iraq was set up after the U.S.-led 1991 Gulf War that liberated Kuwait from a seven-month Iraqi occupation. The small oil-rich state”s defense pact with Washington after the war, calls for pre-positioning weapons and continuous military training in this country.

Kuwait was the launch pad for the 2003 invasion of Iraq that toppled leader Saddam Hussein. It is still a major logistic base for American and other troops still serving there.
