German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Saturday that Saudi Arabia will host the 2020 G20 summit.

She made the announcement on the margins of the current summit that was hosted by Hamburg, Germany.

The statement winding up this year’s event said: “We thank Germany for hosting a successful Hamburg summit … and look forward to meeting again in Argentina in 2018, in Japan in 2019 and in Saudi Arabia in 2020.”

The selection of Saudi Arabia demonstrates the strong trust world powers have in the Kingdom and their recognition of its special standing among 20 of the world’s greatest economies.

Saudi Arabia participated in the two-day 2017 summit, held under the title “Shaping an Interconnected World.” The proceedings in Hamburg got underway on Friday.

A Saudi delegation attended the summit on behalf of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz. It includes Minister Ibrahim Abdulaziz al-Assaf.
