King Salman Underscores Importance of Combating Extremism, Intolerance - ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive

Jakarta- The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, speaking from Indonesia, underscored the importance of dialogue among people belonging to different religious backgrounds and cultures in order to promote tolerance.

King Salman pointed out that religions seek to protect the human rights and happiness of mankind, as well as stressing the significance of fighting extremism in all religions and cultures.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo and King Salman met in the Indonesian capital on Friday. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques also met with top Islamic and religious leaders in Indonesia.

King Salman expressed his happiness with the meeting, saying Indonesia enjoys political stability, economic growth, and a spirit of tolerance and forgiveness among its people.

Saudi Arabia has adopted dialogue among followers of religions and cultures, and contributed to establishing a center for dialogue between the followers of religions and cultures in Vienna, Saudi state-owned news agency SPA cited King Salman as saying.

On the other hand, President Widodo spoke about the importance of tolerance and moderation among the followers of different religions.

He stressed his pride taken by his country’s people on King Salman visiting Indonesia, an event guaranteed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

At the end of the meeting, pictures of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Indonesian President with prominent figures of Islamic religion and other religions in Indonesia were taken.

Indonesian religious figures also expressed their happiness with the historic visit, and thanked King Salman for the opportunity to meet him.

They promised more such meetings to spread moderation, fighting terrorism and extremism and ensuring international peace and security.
