Djibouti – Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Assistant Secretary General for Political Negotiations Affairs Abdel Aziz Aluwaisheg has signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Joint Action Plan with Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

The Executive Secretary of IGAD, Mahboub Maalim, received in Djibouti a delegation from the Saudi-based GCC where delegations from the two organizations agreed in principle on the Memorandum of Understanding and Joint Action Plan 2017-2020.

The two regional blocs explored opportunities through which they can develop cooperation and coordination in areas of common interests.

These areas include security, economic ties, investment and trade, food security and nutrition, agricultural sector development, blue economy, marine corridor, infrastructure and connectivity, education, research and technology, health as well as youth and cultural, social and media outreach.

Meetings in Djibouti concluded on Wednesday where Aluwaisheg announced that the talks aimed at harmonizing and enhancing relations for a stable, peaceful, and economically sound region.

IGAD includes eight countries from Africa: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda, in addition to Eritrea which has frozen its membership.

IGAD’s mission includes promoting regional cooperation and integration to add value to member states’ efforts in achieving peace, security and prosperity. In addition, the organization works to ensure food security and environmental protection, economic cooperation, regional integration and social development, and peace and security.
