Saudi Arabia to Set Up Independent Human Rights Commission | ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive 2005 -2017

Riyadh, Asharq Al-Awsat- Saudi council of ministers headed by the custodian of the two holy mosques King Abdullah approved on Monday the creation of &#34an independent human rights commission,&#34.

The commission aims at protecting and consolidating Human rights in the kingdom, as well as spreading awareness. The head of the commission and its 18 members will be appointed by royal decree,.

According to Minster of information, Ayad Madani the Human rights commission &#34will be totally independent in exercising its task.&#34

No names have been reveled regarding the head of the new commission or its members, but such announcements could be made in next Monday”s council of ministers meeting.

Dr. Muflih al-Qahtani, of the Saudi National human rights Association (NHRA), welcomed the announcement of the new commission stating that it will help support the activities of nongovernmental institutions, and that the commission will be a significant link between the council of ministers and other governmental departments.
