Riyadh, Hail, Asharq Al-Awsat – A Saudi security source revealed to Asharq Al-Awsat that the security forces are searching for a German couple after they were reported missing in the desert area close to the Saudi city of Medina.

Armed militants killed four French tourists in the same area two years ago.

Spokesman of the Medina province police Colonel Mohsen al Radadi stressed that the security forces are still searching for the German couple who are believed to have gone missing whilst passing through areas close to Medina.

Al Radadi told Asharq al-Awsat that that helicopters and ground security units are searching for the couple. The spokesman did not state the nature of the couple’s work.

There is information however that the German couple are believed to be on an archaeological mission particularly in the area close to Al Ula and Madayen Saleh.

Asharq Al-Awsat learnt that the German couple headed to Al Ula across the desert in Harrat al Shaqa, northern Medina. Though the couple have only been missing for four days, the security authorities were only informed of the disappearance on Thursday.

The security forces in Medina and Hail are searching for the German couple in the desert area between the two provinces.

The German couple were travelling in a white Jeep to the city of Al Ula from Al Hanakiya before they lost their way.

The Medina police spokesman told Asharq Al-Awsat that the operations department were informed by a goat herder that he saw the German couple who stopped him to ask for directions.

Ruling out kidnapping, Colonel Mohsen al Radadi said that the indications point out that the couple have lost their way and that the search operation is under way.
