Saudi Arabia Celebrates National Day and KAUST Launch | ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive 2005 -2017

Riyadh-Thuwal, Asharq Al-Awsat – The celebration of Saudi Arabia’s 79th National Day coincides with the launch of one of the country’s most important scientific projects. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz described the launch of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology [KAUST] later today as the culmination of a 25-year-old dream. The opening ceremony of the university – which is sponsored by King Abdullah – is set to take place later today in Thuwal in western Saudi Arabia, and will be attended by a number of world leaders.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques inspected the KAUST campus in Thuwal on Tuesday afternoon, and made final preparations for the opening ceremony which is scheduled to take place later today in the presence of world leaders and international dignitaries.

King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz toured the university campus by bus, along with the Saudi Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali al Naimi, who explained [to the King] how the university will operate when it is complete and studies begin. Also present was President of Saudi Aramco Khalid al-Falih, and a number of senior Aramco and KAUST officials.

King Abdullah also inspected the exhibition hall where the KAUST opening ceremony will take place, and the reception hall where the King will greet the distinguished guests and leaders.
