ANKARA, Turkey (AP) – Turkey’s state-run news agency says clashes in the southeast have left two Turkish soldiers and two Kurdish rebels dead.

The Anatolia news agency says one Turkish lieutenant and two rebels were killed in a clash in the southeastern province of Bingol, while another soldier died in a separate clash in Sirnak province. The clashes occurred on Friday.

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, has been fighting for self-rule in southeast Turkey since 1984. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people. The group uses strongholds in northern Iraq for cross-border raids. Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union consider the PKK a terrorist organization.
