Jeddah, Asharq Al-Awsat – Saudi Arabia has appointed its former ambassador to the United States, Prince Bandar Bin Sultan, as the new intelligence chief, according to state media.

The official Saudi Press Agency [SPA] reported the following royal decree on Thursday:

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, issued a royal order today relieving Prince Muqrin Bin Abdulaziz from his post as Chief of General Intelligence and appointing him as an Advisor and Special Envoy to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques at the rank of Minister. In addition to this, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques has appointed Prince Bandar Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz as Chief of General Intelligence, alongside his current post as Secretary-General of the National Security Council at the rank of minister.

The royal decree urged the competent authorities to implement this order immediately.

Prince Bandar served as Saudi Arabia’s envoy to Washington for 22 years, a period spanning the first Gulf War and the 9/11 attacks on the US. He is the son of late Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who passed away last October and had served as Saudi Arabia’s defense minister for five decades.
