RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) – A 16-year-old was fatally shot by Israeli troops after throwing firebombs at the gate of a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, Israeli officials said Saturday.

A 19-year-old Palestinian, who was also from the Jalazoun refugee camp, was wounded in the leg, Palestinian officials said. The Israeli military said the two were among a group of Palestinians who were throwing firebombs at the Beit El settlement. The soldiers opened fire on the group after firing warning shots, the military said.

In a separate violent incident in the West Bank, a Palestinian man struck and wounded two Israeli policemen Saturday when he drove his Mercedes into them at a checkpoint, Israeli police said.

The 37-year-old driver was arrested after he told police he had intentionally driven his car toward the two traffic police who were checking motorists in a West Bank suburb of Jerusalem, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. The spokesman said it was a politically motivated attack, but he did not elaborate.

The two attacks came after a 31-year-old Palestinian was killed Friday when he was struck in the chest by a tear gas canister fired by Israeli troops who were dispersing a protest against Israel’s West Bank separation barrier. A Palestinian man wielding a knife was also shot and killed Friday by Jewish settlers on Friday after he entered the West Bank settlement, the Israeli military said.

Meanwhile in the Gaza Strip, officials announced that the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt would be open Saturday and Sunday to allow medical patients to leave the blockaded territory.

Gazans began lining up at the border Saturday morning, and by midday the first passengers started crossing. Israel and Egypt have kept Gaza’s borders virtually sealed since the Islamic militant Hamas seized the territory by force in June 2007.
