RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) – Palestinians say they will graduate their first group of officers from their own security academy.

Around 140 officers will graduate from a newly-built Palestinian security academy in the West Bank town of Jericho on Saturday. In the past, security officials were trained abroad.

The academy is funded by international donors who are assisting the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas halt attacks on Israelis from the West Bank and lawlessness.

Palestinians will ask for millions at a conference in Berlin next week to support security efforts. Abbas is obliged to control security as a part of peace negotiations with Israel.

But rival group Hamas, which rules Gaza, say the forces repress their loyalists in the West Bank.
