London, Ramallah – The Palestinian government announced on Tuesday the formation of a national team tasked with demarcating maritime borders.

The mission will be carried out in cooperation with countries that share water borders with Palestine, reported the German Press Agency (DPA).

The government said after its weekly meeting in Ramallah, that the demarcation will “be based on the rights of the Palestinian people, Palestine’s membership in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and international norms and treaties.”

In 2015, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had submitted a declaration to the United Nations chief on the demarcation of Palestine’s maritime border in accordance to the international organization’s convention.

The Palestinian government urged all countries, institutions and companies against operating in Palestine’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) without obtaining the necessary legal permit from the concerned Palestinian authorities.

“Any operation carried out within the Palestinian maritime borders without the coordination of the concerned sides will be considered a violation of the rights of the Palestinian people and their constant sovereignty and resources,” declared the government.

It also said that such activity will also be deemed a violation of UN conventions and international law.
