JERUSALEM, (Reuters) – Palestinian gunmen opened fire on a car in the West Bank on Friday, critically wounding one Israeli, the army said.

The car was ambushed by a passing vehicle on a road near the Jewish settlement of Beit Haggai, close to the city of Hebron.

Settlers said the car driver was shot in the head. Two passengers were lightly wounded.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility from Palestinian militants. Three settlers were killed in the same area on Oct. 16.

Palestinian militants have vowed to avenge Israel”s killing of four gunmen in an airstrike on the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

That Israeli action followed a suicide bombing which killed five people in central Israel last week.
