VIENNA (AFP) — The UN atomic watchdog is still evaluating samples taken from an alleged nuclear site in Syria, but “so far we have no indication of any nuclear material,” IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei said Monday.

In June, Syria allowed inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to visit Al-Kibar, a remote desert site which the United States claims was a clandestine nuclear facility.

“Samples taken from the site are still being analysed and evaluated by the agency, but so far we have found no indication of any nuclear material,” ElBaradei said in his opening address to the IAEA’s 35-member board of governors.
