Najaf/Baghdad, Asharq Al-Awsat – A leading figure from the National Iraqi Alliance has called on Nouri al Maliki to accept the “reality” that there will be “no government” without the participation of his opponent, former Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi.

Commenting on the Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq Leader Ammar al Hakim’s refusal to describe the Iraqiya electoral list headed by Allawi as “Baathist,” the leading figure, who spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat on condition of anonymity said, “Al Hakim’s proposals were serious but they came at a time when the Iraqiya List was facing a lot of criticism, which the Supreme Council leader believed to be false despite his criticism of some members of the list.”

The key figure indicated that “Al Hakim emphasized that there could be no government without Allawi.” The source added, “Al Maliki should accept reality.”

Meanwhile, supporters of the Sadrist current have been casting their votes in a referendum to choose among five candidates to occupy the position of Prime Minister of Iraq, including al Maliki, Allawi and Adel al Mahdi. According to sources, key figures ordered Sadr supporters to nominate Qusay al Suhail, member of the Al Ahrar bloc that is affiliated to the Sadrist trend.
