Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat- The supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Egypt, Mohamed Akef has rejected accusations made by the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that the group poses a threat to the security of Egypt.

In a press statement, Akef said, “We were deeply hurt by what President Mubarak declared.” “The brotherhood has never been and never will be anything but an advocate of good deeds. It seeks the well being, security and stability of the country, and the interest, progression, and advancement of Islamic nation.” He added that the Muslim Brotherhood rejects the concept of violence and the Takfir ideology.

Last Thursday, President Hosni Mubarak described the Muslim Brotherhood movement as a danger to the security and safety of Egypt, emphasizing that the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood would cause Egypt to be isolated from the world. He further claimed that the rise to power of this group could lead to a devastating economical crisis and cause investors to leave the country. The supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood responded by saying, “That which is causing investors to flee is tyranny, corruption, and martial law under which tens of thousands of people were detained without charge, investigation or trial”. Akef demanded that those in power and members of the opposition cooperate to eliminate such causes.
