Jakarta, Indonesia-Thousands of demonstrators set fire to government buildings on Sumatra Island on Monday while protesting a local election they claim was marred by irregularities and fraud, police and witnesses said.

Some 4,000 people who took to the streets in Bintuhan, a town in Bengkulu province, went on a rampage after officials failed to meet with their representatives to discuss allegations that last month”s vote for the posts of district head and deputy were rigged.

Outnumbered police stood by as the crowd torched a lawmaker”s residence, an election commission office, and three other government buildings. No arrests have been made, The Associated Press reported.
