BEIRUT, Lebanon -The Lebanese government asked Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday to put off a visit to Lebanon after an Israeli airstrike that killed more than 50 people.

Lebanon said it would only consider an immediate cease-fire to the Israeli-Hezbollah fighting.

Rice had been expected to arrive in Beirut from Israel later Sunday to discuss an overall peace package and Lebanon’s own proposals to end the fighting. Officials traveling with Rice said her trip had been tentatively planned but was never certain.
