Lebanon: As Elections Loom, Security Breaches on the Rise | ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive 2005 -2017

Beirut, Asharq Al-Awsat- A Lebanese security source has stated to Asharq Al-Awsat that the Lebanese army and Security agencies are determined to maintain the safety of its citizens. The source also revealed the existence of a security plan for dealing with mobile operations and the apprehension of those that carry them out and who seek to disrupt the internal security of Lebanon. He said “the popular mood and the opinion polls on the ground are not in their favor.”

The source added that violations have snowballed day by day, and questions are being raised about the state of Lebanese security prior to the forthcoming parliamentary elections that are scheduled to take place on 7 June.

The security source also spoke about “the plan to confound the army and the security forces, distorting their image and calling into question their ability to control the [Lebanese] security three months before the elections.”

In a series of security incidents that have become daily, unknown suspects in the border town of Khiam set fire to a car belonging to Ahmed Al-Assad, the President of the Lebanese Option Gathering party [LOG] and a parliamentary candidate in Southern Lebanon. The car was in the possession of one of Mr. Al-Assad’s supporters, named Essam Assad Al-Abdullah. The car was completely destroyed.

In addition to this, three unidentified gunmen were involved in a robbery in Beirut in which they escaped on a Cherokee jeep with 5 million Lebanese pounds [LBP].
