MOSCOW (AP) – The king of Bahrain on his first visit to Russia has supported Russia’s push for hosting a Middle East peace conference.

King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa says his nation backs Russia’s plan to hold the conference early next year. He spoke after Tuesday’s talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Medvedev said that Russia and Bahrain had similar views on the situation in the Middle East and security in the Gulf. He added that Russia is willing to cooperate with Bahrain in energy, transport and other spheres.

Russian and Bahraini officials signed a deal on cooperation in the nuclear field, which focuses on personnel training and envisages the potential building of a small nuclear plant in Bahrain.
