AMMAN, Jordan (AP) – Jordanian authorities on Tuesday confirmed the arrests of two members of the kingdom’s largest Muslim opposition group suspected of having undertaken actions against national security.

On Monday, the head of the Brotherhood’s political arm, the Islamic Action Front, Zaki Abu-Rsheid revealed that the police detained Mahmoud Jaradat, a hospital employee, and Homam Mohammed Moussa, a university employee in the northeastern city of Zarqa.

The men’s families said the two were arrested for allegedly forming armed militias.

Chief government spokesman Nasser Judeh told reporters Tuesday that the Muslim Brotherhood pair were “arrested for actions which undermined the security of the country” but did not elaborate.

Judeh added that “anyone who tries to sabotage the security of the country will be arrested” while also denying the arrests had anything to do with the country’s upcoming local elections July 18.

The Islamic Action Front is the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood Movement and is represented in the Lower House of Parliament by a bloc of 17 members.

Abu-Rsheid said the two suspects did not have any criminal record, and the Front will appoint lawyers for their defense.
